Varieties of Work Opportunities for F-1 Students:

  • On-Campus Job:

Able to 20 hours per week throughout the university tenure.

Full-time (40 hours per week) during breaks.

Positions include Teaching Assistantships, Research Assistantships, Fellowships, and hourly roles.

  • Off-Campus Job:
  1. Curricular Practical Training (CPT):

Provides practical work experience aligned with the curriculum.

Available after 9 months of lawful status.

Can be full-time or part-time.

  • Student’s Dependent: While international students may have opportunities to secure on-campus employment or engage in work activities, dependents under the F-2 visa category are restricted from working under current regulations and are not eligible for a social security number.

Cooperative Education (Co-Op):

Cooperative education, or co-op, integrates classroom learning with paid employment related to the student’s field of study. It offers practical work experience aimed at applying academic lessons in a real-world business environment.

Post Study Work Visa in USA

 

  • International students in the US with an F-1 visa can engage in practical training during their degree program or immediately after graduation. Two categories are: curricular practical training (CPT) plus optional practical training (OPT).
  • CPT is part of the degree program, while OPT allows for up to 12 months of training after graduation, focused on the student’s major or field of study. Students in STEM fields can extend OPT to 24 months.
  • After completing each educational level (e.g., bachelor’s or master’s), students can apply for 12 months of OPT.
